GPS server time is generated via atomic clocks onboard the constellation of satellites that orbit the Earth. This time can be received and distributed using a GPS time server. GPS time servers are perhaps the most accurate, reliable and secure method of computer network time synchronization and a signal can be received anywhere on the planet.
Whilst not strictly the same as the global timescale UTC (Coordinated Universal Time), as GPS time doesn't account for leap seconds, the difference between the two (currently 17 seconds) is accounted fro in the time code sent by the GPS satellites. This allows the Network Time Protocol (NTP) to convert it to UTC before it is distributed.
